Increasing evidences support the prominence of metabolic cross-feeding in determining structure and dynamics of microbial communities. I will present the latest work from my lab in using genome-scale metabolic models and metabolomics to uncover specific metabolic interactions in complex microbial communities. I will also discuss how xenobiotics (e.g. drugs) change bacterial phenotypes uncovering a complex yet fascinating dimension to our understanding of life in communities.
